Iโm Not Boycotting Amazon, But I am Buying Smarter ๐๐ก

Letโs get one thing clear: Iโm not boycotting Amazon. I still shop there for books, and I probably will for a long time. Why? Because Amazon is still essential for authors, especially indie authors who rely on those sales, rankings, and reviews to grow. Without Amazon, so many talented writers would never get seen. And I am all about supporting indie authors. Always have been, always will ๐
Butโฆ Iโm also making a conscious shift in where I shop for my books and audiobooks. That doesnโt mean Iโm cutting Amazon out completely. It means Iโm getting a little more intentional about where I spend my book money.
Where Iโm Shopping Instead
So while Iโll still use Amazon when I need to, Iโm now checking a few other places first. These are my go-to alternatives:
- The authorโs own website (especially for signed copies or exclusive editions)
- Bookshop.org for physical books and ebooks
- Libro.fm for audiobooks
- Kobo for ebooks
- Barnes & Noble for physical books and ebooks
These platforms offer different benefits, and some are seriously underrated. Plus, they give me a way to support local bookstores and authors directly. Thatโs a win in my book ๐
Why Iโm Loving Bookshop.org โค๏ธ
Bookshop.org has quickly become my favorite spot for ordering physical books. And guess what? They now offer ebooks too!
Hereโs why Iโm all in:
- A portion of every sale supports independent bookstores
- You can even choose a local store to support with each purchase
- The site is easy to use and feels good to shop on
- Their selection is wide, and they ship quickly
- Itโs not Amazon ๐
Even when I canโt resist a special edition from Amazon, I check Bookshop.org first. If they have it, thatโs where Iโm buying.
Audiobooks? Iโm Team Libro.fm ๐ง
If you havenโt tried Libro.fm yet, let me introduce you to your new audiobook BFF. Itโs like Audible, but better for your conscience. This was actually an easy choice. Iโve been an Audible member since 2010, so it took me a while to switch. I tried several others, and Libro.fm was by far the best.
Hereโs what makes it amazing:
- You own the audiobooks you buy (no weird rules) and YES, you can download the files
- Credits donโt expire
- You support a local bookstore of your choice with every purchase
- Monthly membership options are just as good as Audible
- Theyโve got all the same narrators and bestsellers
- It feels good to listen and support indie shops at the same time
- Itโs available internationally
And yes, theyโve got an app for easy listening. Iโve had zero issues switching over.
The Bottom Line
This isnโt about guilt-tripping anyone for using Amazon. I still do. But Iโve learned there are so many ways to support authors, bookstores, and the book community beyond one mega-retailer.
So if youโre looking to mix things up a bit, check out these alternatives. Even one small shift makes a big difference ๐ช
Still shopping Amazon? Cool. Looking for another way to shop? I got you covered ๐
Letโs keep reading and supporting the book world however we can. Always with love ๐
